In Coeur d’Alene near Fernan Lake, the Fernan Ranger District of the Panhandle National Forests has developed a 14-mile ATV trail that connects Windy Ridge and the Hudlow Creek area. To access the Hudlow Creek trailhead, go north of Coeur d’Alene on U.S. 95, and turn right on Ohio Match Road, two miles north of the Highway 53-U.S. 95 junction. Go east on Ohio Match Road, which becomes Forest Road #437. Follow #437 to Hudlow Saddle, and go straight on the Hudlow Road to reach Hudlow Creek and the #802 trailhead. Take off on Trail #802 as it winds around the edges of Nicholas Creek and climbs to a ridge-divide. Caution: There are a number of tight switchbacks on the trail that will challenge a machine beyond 48 inches wide. You’ll pass by Spades Mountain, Burnt Cabin Summit and Huckleberry Mountain. The route ends when it hits Forest Road #612. Here you should turn around and retrace your tracks to the trailhead. The route is 28 miles total. Be sure to bring plenty of food and water. No services.
